Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Punxsutawney Phil was right when it came to six more weeks of winter. With that weather prediction, we’re due to have more inclement weather this week, including below freezing temperatures. Here are five helpful tips that will help your pipes from freezing and bursting:
1. Keep garage doors closed. Especially if your water supply lines are in the garage, it’s best to keep as much heat in the house as possible.
2. Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature throughout the day. While it might be tempting to save some money and turn the thermostat down if you’re not at home during the day, it will not be helpful to your pipes that need that warmer temp. It’s important to keep your thermostat at 55 degrees or above during cold snaps.
3. Open cabinet doors around pipes of concern. This will allow the warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
4. Let cold water drip from the faucet. Letting a trickle of water come through the pipes will help prevent the water from freezing.
5. Insulate your pipes. A long-term goal would be to add insulation around your pipes, and overall in your home. This will help maintain the temperature throughout the home. Also make sure that you seal cracks and openings around doors and windows to prevent drafts.
