We’re all about the crazy “National Days” calendar and we can’t help but mention that yesterday, September 29th, was National Coffee Day! As a human, I sure do love a good cup of coffee in the morning, but as a plumber, I find coffee to be a royal pain. One of the main causes for blockages in pipes is COFFEE GROUNDS.
While you might have heard the old wives’ tale that putting coffee grounds down the drain is “good” for your plumbing and will help clean your pipes, that most definitely isn’t the case. It may seem that coffee is small enough that it can easily pass through, but over time, the grounds will continue to build in the system and create blockages. Even with a garbage disposal, the grounds will still continue to be too much for your pipes.
While the easy solution to protecting your pipes from coffee grounds would be to just put your grounds in the garbage, you also have some other potential uses for those used grounds. If you have a garden, sprinkle them throughout the garden to remove any pesky bugs. You can also use coffee grounds to absorb food odor in your fridge. No matter how you choose to use these grounds, please DON’T put down the drain.
