Tis’ the season for apple cider, hayrides and haunted houses, but one thing that you don’t want to happen isa scare this Fall…like a clogged pipe! While getting into the Fall festivities, carving pumpkins may be a fun family tradition, but can create a lot of chaos for your plumbing. Here are three reasons why you should keep your pumpkins far away from your garbage disposal and sink.
- While some pumpkin seeds may be small, the seeds are too hard for your garbage disposal to fully break down and can cause them to create a blockage.
- The inside of the pumpkins are sticky. That stickiness can form a glue-like substance in your pipes and blockages in your pipes. Or worse, creating backups in your sewer lines.
- Even washing your “pumpkin hands” can create an issue. While you may not be directly putting anything down the drain, the stickiness from the pumpkin’s innards can create enough of an issue that you may need a plumber.
The best way to avoid having any pumpkin issues with your plumbing is by using gloves to carve the pumpkin. This way your hands won’t come in contact with the inside of the pumpkin. Also, while taking out the seeds, use a spoon and put it all on a paper towel. You can either dispose of the seeds and innards in the garbage, or you can dry out the seeds for other usage. No matter what you decide to do with the inside of the pumpkin, just remember to not put them down the drain this Fall!
